IT Support

On-site IT support in Stoke-on-Trent.

Office networks, workstations, email and backups - set up properly the first time, or straightened out after someone else did not.

What I set up

New office, empty rooms, a delivery of boxes and a deadline. I get the whole thing working: wired and wireless networking that actually reaches the far corner of the building, workstations configured the same way as each other so support is predictable, printers and shared drives that everyone can find, business email with spam filtering that is tuned rather than left on defaults, and backups that have been restored from at least once to prove they work.

That last point matters more than it sounds. A backup nobody has ever tested is not a backup, it is a hope. Part of the job is proving the restore before you need it.

Fixing what is already there

More often the situation is an office that grew organically. Nothing is documented, the person who set it up left two years ago, and there is a cupboard with four devices in it that nobody can identify. That work starts with mapping what actually exists, replacing whatever is failing or unsupported, and - importantly - writing it all down so you are not in the same position next time.

Where I cover

Based in Stoke-on-Trent and happy to travel anywhere within reasonable range - across Staffordshire and into south Cheshire. Newcastle-under-Lyme, Kidsgrove, Stone, Leek, Congleton and Crewe are all routine. If you are further out than that, ask anyway; if the job is worth the drive it is not a problem.

What this is not

This is not a 24/7 managed service desk with a contractual response time. It is one engineer who answers the phone and turns up. For a small office that is usually faster and always cheaper than the alternative. For a company with two hundred staff and shift patterns, it is not enough, and you should hire an MSP instead - I would rather say that now than take the work and under-deliver.

Common questions

Do you charge a call-out fee?

Ask when you get in touch. Whatever the arrangement, you will know the cost before anyone drives out to you, and small jobs are not padded into big ones.

How quickly can you get to us?

For anything urgent within the Stoke-on-Trent area, usually the same day or the next working day. There is no ticket queue to sit in, because there is no ticket system.

Do you offer ongoing support contracts?

Yes, though most small offices do not need one. It is often cheaper to call when something breaks than to pay monthly for a contract you rarely use. That gets discussed honestly rather than sold by default.

Can you take over from our current IT provider?

Yes. That usually starts with working out what is actually in place, since handovers are rarely documented, then writing it down properly so you own the knowledge.

Tell me what needs sorting.

Describe the office, the problem, or the move - I will tell you honestly whether this is a job for me.
