Contracting

A developer you can add to the team.

Short engagements and long ones. Remote across the UK, or on-site if you are within reach of Staffordshire.

How I work with teams

The useful contractor is the one who fits into how you already work rather than arriving with opinions about how you should. That means learning your codebase and its conventions before changing them, using your ticketing and review process instead of asking for exceptions, and being genuinely productive in the first week rather than the third.

It also means being straightforward about what I do not know. If a part of your stack is unfamiliar, you will hear that on day one, along with how long it will take me to get up to speed - not discover it in a sprint review.

What I take on

  • Feature work on an existing product, alongside your permanent team.
  • Clearing a backlog of work that never quite reaches the top of the sprint.
  • Building something greenfield where a permanent hire is not justified yet.
  • Covering parental leave, notice periods, or a gap between hires.
  • Unpicking a system whose original author has left.

Practicalities

Engagements are agreed by the day or by the project, with a clear start and end date written down before anything begins, and taken on an outside-IR35 basis. There is no published day rate - what the work costs depends on what the work is, so tell me the shape of it and you will get a number. Get in touch for current availability.

Invoicing is monthly unless the engagement is short enough to bill on completion. Everything I write is yours - code, documentation, and the reasoning behind the decisions.

Common questions

Are you inside or outside IR35?

I work on an outside-IR35 basis. Status ultimately follows the working practices of the engagement rather than anyone's preference, so it is established and put in writing before the work starts rather than left ambiguous.

What is the minimum engagement?

Anything from a few days upward. Very short engagements are fine when the problem is well defined; if it is not well defined yet, a short scoping piece usually saves money later.

Can you work on-site?

Yes, within reach of Staffordshire, and remotely anywhere in the UK. Most engagements work best as mostly remote with occasional days on-site at the start.

Do you work through agencies?

Direct engagements are preferred because they are simpler and cheaper for the client, but agency arrangements are not a problem.

Got a gap on the team?

Tell me the stack, the timeframe and roughly what needs doing, and I will tell you whether I am the right fit.
